CROSS POLLINATOR: DeJong’s Fertil Mulch!

Landscaping Products | Redmond, WA (dejongss.com) Gardens ALIVE Design actively encourages the use of Fertil-Mulch® after planting primarily because it has the highest nutrient analysis when test results are compared from several mulch suppliers. Not only does it suppress weeds, but also evenly feeds the soil and in turn helps those newly installed plants to thrive. Fertil-Mulch® also keeps soils cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter as well as prevents water evaporation during the summer months, when we need all of the ground water that is available. Reapplication of Fertil-Mulch® is recommended every other year after the initial installation of your landscape at the rate of 1-2″ thick. With Redmond and Lake Steven’s locations as well as retail garden centers, be sure and ask specifically for Fertil-Mulch®. And tell them that Kirsten at Gardens ALIVE Design sent you! What is Fertil-Mulch®?Fertil-Mulch® is a garden mulch that is made from Hemlock and Fir sawdust that has been composted with cow manure and aged horse manure. Within the composting process, the high temperatures kill any existing weed seed and any odor causing bacteria to become a product with a neutral aroma. We test our Fertil Mulch® for heavy metals and pathogens to be rated grade “AA,” safe for all types of gardening. During and after composting, the product is screened in order to achieve a uniformed color and texture. When originally placed in your beds the rich dark color dresses up your area making your plants illuminate. As the Fertil-Mulch® dries, it becomes a natural lighter brown color, easily fluffed up or watered down to obtain that rich dark “coffee-ground” color again.  How to use our Fertil-Mulch®?Fertil-Mulch® can be used as a top dressing to suppress weeds in place of bark. Unlike bark products, the Fertil-Mulch® not only helps keep the weeds down but adds nutrients to your existing soil as well. When it rains or during your watering process, the nutrients seep into the ground feeding your plants. Even the worms interact with the Fertil-Mulch® by slowly working it into the soil allowing you to fertilize less. The Fertil-Mulch® helps retain moisture and heat; keeping your plants warm in the winter, as well as damp and cool in the summer. The overall recommendation for weed suppression is applying the product 3″ deep; keeping those meddlesome weeds from returning quickly. For the best result, properly weed your area before putting down your product. One cubic yard will cover 100 square feet or 10′ x 10′ area at the 3″ deep.
