Job Description
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities (Daily, Weekly & other):
Daily-
- Conduct 2X daily inspection of assigned area to identify moisture requirements and communicate possible problems.
- Provide correct moisture to crops through utilization of sprinklers, fog, drip tubes, boom, and hand watering
- Decision-making skills using knowledge of temperature, soil moisture, fertilizer, variety response, PGRs in daily crop management; Propose ideas to Head Grower
- Have a plan for next 7-10 days and be able to verbally explain or write what needs to be accomplished in less than 5-10 min with conviction
- Reduce shrinkage and improve overall plant quality
- Check Argus daily to ensure proper conditions
Weekly-
- Utilize injectors and ensure proper mixing of fertilizer and correct fertilizer levels in injector
- Perform chemical applications through use of backpack, sprayers, and dosatrons.Keep pesticide records up to date and ensure all signs are properly placed
- Properly use and maintain equipment in growing area
- Maintain sanitation (to include non-plant material such as algae-free floors, weed free) and organization of assigned work area
- Check vigor of roots and scout crops
- Walk crops with Head Grower at least weekly
- Interpret media test results and recommend action for crop nutrition
- Visually inspect insect population; place sticky cards and record findings weekly; propose action plan to Head Grower
- Participate in discussion with Head Grower the rate recommendations for application of chemicals based on scouting results
- Be familiar with and able to manage ready dates of all crops in assigned area to improve order fulfillment in meeting targeted ship dates
- Attend weekly Grower Meeting to stay up to date on facility happenings, and provide updates on your assigned area including environment issues, maintenance requests, etc.
- Determine, or help determine chemicals needed, ppm rates, and timing for applications depending on crop needs. Can write sprays for level 1 and 2
- Communicate with Head Grower when product is not ready for sales or if product needs to be pushed to sales
Other-
- Review WPS laws and pesticide labels
- Actively follow WPS laws
- Organize injector areas, assigned area, chemical storage
- Learn how to calibrate pH/EC meters on injectors
- Read up on and learn Argus
- Help fellow growers if not busy in your own section
- Even if an assigned task is not on the immediate job description but it is done for Skagit Hort, is work required by the company
- Understand best uses of PGRs, pesticides, and fungicides for optimal effectiveness and cost
- Work with Head Grower to properly use beneficial biologicals where appropriate
- Submit Maintenance requests as needed
- Work with Head Grower to space plan for incoming product
- Coordinate with Plant Move and Plant Maintenance Supervisors to ensure crops are in their correct locations and adhering to growth specifications
Required / Preferred Qualifications:
Safety
- College degree or equivalent growing experience
- Minimum of 2+years at Level 2
- Computer experience
- Effective communication (verbal and written)
- Have or ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator License
- Show a desire to grow/work with plants
- Able to work independently
- Organizational skills
- Eagerness to complete all assignments as required. Show a sense of urgency
- Dedication to producing quality product
- Basic math skills
- Functional English understanding and speaking
- Knowledgeable in the use and maintenance of equipment (general upkeep of sprayers)
- Able to manage Level 1 and 2 Growers to complete your assigned duties
- Able to input data electronically to track location movement and plant loss
- Ability and desire to further education through publications, extension courses, industry forums
- Can use Sage and understand WO’s, crop schedules, BOM’s, etc.
- Ability to plan while considering day-to-day and big picture objectives
- Willing to work holidays and weekends as required
- Able to lift/carry weights of up to 50lbs
- Able to stand/walk for long periods of time
- Able to work in all environmental conditions and move between environmental changes (indoor vs outdoor work)
